We Are Not Woke!

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

Woke culture is mainly defined as noticing what's not right and calling it out. We define ourselves as woke because of everything that's happened over this very long period of world history. People call out out others, cancel them on twitter or protest against them because these things are important.

Disclaimer: Now before I go any further, all of the things said above are obviously not bad things, but what I am about to address is a highly sensitive topic.

Two months ago, it took All American - S3 Ep11, to realise that I am not woke; that we are still not woke. We say we love our black women, We love our black queens and we have justified that through various social media platforms (Tik-tok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc,) along with the hashtag.

I don't know if it was me, but Breonna Taylors death had less of an impact than George Floyds. Don't get me wrong, the turnout when citizens went out was beautiful, so many people came to honour her and support her family, but it felt like the exact same energy as they had for many years of fighting for discriminatory justice before George Floyds passing. I thought we had finally opened door which was jammed, that we finally cracked it open, but when we heard about the news of Breonna, no-one wants to enter through it. It may be unintentional, but we minimalize women (black women on top of that) to hashtags and call that justice.

Megan thee stallion was shot by a guy, yet she was the one questioned why he shot her. Why is the way she brands and sells her music all the sudden her fault? We need to stop repeating history over and over, if we want equality, lets treat everybody equally.

Lets bring the impact back when George Floyd couldn't breathe or even a stronger one at that, because injustice isn't gonna stop until we come back stronger for our brothers and sisters. Don't let the fire die on women, lets keep it going for all of us. We need to stampede all over the streets for our black woman as we fight for everything which is equally as important. For all our mothers, grandmother and sisters, hold up a flower for them let them know that they do matter, because the do. Lets not forget that.
